When the outcome matches the prediction — when you get the thing you worked for, exactly as expected — the dopamine signal stays flat. There's no error to correct. No new information. The brain already priced in the outcome. What generates the dopamine spike is the gap between expected and better-than-expected — the surprise, the uncertainty, the not-yet. Which means the moment the outcome is certain, the most reliable source of the feeling is already gone. You haven't arrived at satisfaction. You've arrived at the point where the chemical driver of satisfaction has nothing left to do.

Hedonic adaptation compounds this. Even when arrival initially delivers some version of the feeling you were chasing, the brain recalibrates to the new normal with uncomfortable speed. The promotion becomes the baseline within weeks. The apartment becomes just where you live. The new relationship becomes the familiar relationship. This isn't ingratitude or character failure — it's the brain doing exactly what it was built to do, which is to stop allocating attention to things that are stable and redirect it toward things that are uncertain, changing, still in motion. The brain's job is to navigate the future, not to savor the present. And it's relentlessly good at its job.

Two arrivals that couldn't hold the weight
